Literacy Center
A daily after-school program for children in Kindergarten through 7th grade, Fortress Literacy Center (FLC) aims to provide a holistic approach to the well-being and growth of southeast Fort Worth’s youth through programs that will help them achieve their full potential in school.

The goals of FLC are to emphasize the importance of literacy, teach social skills, expose the children to life possibilities outside this neighborhood, and to teach and model the love and salvation of Jesus Christ.
FLC provides a structured and safe environment for children and youth during peak youth violence hours. Students participate in the following rotations each day:
- Literacy Lab — students utilize a state-of-the-art, technology-based computer lab to address reading skills and comprehension. For the last 4 years, our students have experienced an average increase of 2 grade levels in reading comprehension during each 9-month period, with one student gaining an astounding 5.6 grade levels in one year!
- Homework Room —offers one-on-one tutoring for students who need extra help, as well as mentorship and encouragement to complete assignments and perform to the highest standards.
- F.O.R.T. (Faith, Obedience and Real Talk) — a life-skills course where relevant issues are discussed, and appropriate reactions are explored and applied.
FLC is currently serving 62 students, with a waiting list year-round. The program has approximately 30 volunteers per year, with 15% of the volunteers serving on a consistent basis.
How Can You Make A Difference?
- participate in our Mentor Program and develop a meaningful, trusting, edifying relationship with one of our students. Minimum requirement is 1 phone call per week, and 1 face-to-face meeting per month
- tutor a student in math, spelling, reading, science, history, etc. anytime between 3 and 8, Monday through Thursday
- help with homework
- read aloud to students, or let them read to you
- teach a class: creative writing, time management, health and hygeine, art, etc…
- host a monthly birthday celebration during after-school-snack time.
