Training week is all about getting ready for our programs — rearranging classrooms, learning new skills, but most importantly, building the relationships that make the Fortress staff a Fortress FAMILY. #ilovemyjob #fortresssummer
Our after school program has been filled with song and music this school year, thanks to a partnership with the @fwyouthorchestra. Today we were treated to a performance by our oldest and youngest students. A special thank you to #FWYO music teachers David and Celeste, and countless other FWYO #volunteers, for investing their time and gifts into our kids.
Have you always wanted to work for Fort Worth’s best nonprofit? 😉 Now is your chance! We are accepting applications for our Assistant Program Coordinator position. Visit www.fortressydc.org/hiring for the full job description and application. .

Our lead staff took turns practicing behind the wheel of our new minibus this week, and our kids have been enjoying field trips and pick-ups from school on these cold, wet days. We’re so grateful for the blessing this new transportation has been and will continue to be for years to come. (Our janky old vans have moved on to new usefulness, transporting meals to organizations just like ours!) Thank you to our incredibly gracious and generous supporters for this gift: @venturemech
Gotta love a sunshiny 75 degree day in February!
Valentine’s Day might have come and gone, but who says you need a calendar to wear heart glasses and eat candy?
D’Iria’s dad stopped by this morning during preschool to show some love to his favorite valentine. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! ❤️❤️
Circuits and wires and electricity, oh my! #STEM in #afterschool
January is National Mentoring Month! To celebrate, we are highlighting some of the awesome volunteers who devote an hour each week to mentor one of our kids.
Today's spotlight is on Claire who mentors 2nd grader Willow. On a normal mentor day you can most often find Claire and Willow dancing or playing outside. When asked what Claire feels she contributes to her mentee, she said, "that I truly care for her and that she is loved and worthy to accomplish so much in her life." Claire hopes she is able to continue to work with Willow as she grows and learns new things.
We love mentors like Claire who give of their time and talents to benefit one of our kids. Do you have an hour a week to invest in a life? We recently enrolled 6 new After School kids that are looking for a mentor. If you are interested, check out the link in our bio and apply! #mentoring #nationalmentoringmonth
Wide-eyed wonder is still alive and well almost a month after Christmas. Thanks to a couple of local foundations and one sweet little girl who gave some of her cherished toys a chance to be loved by someone new, our kids have so much to choose from in our Reward Store! (And Ms. Maria has thoroughly enjoyed restocking it!)
January is National Mentoring Month! To celebrate, we are highlighting some of the awesome volunteers who devote an hour each week to mentor one of our kids.
Today’s spotlight is on Lauren who mentors 3rd grader Lizzy. Lauren is in her second year at Fortress and loves the opportunity the program gives her to make a difference in a child’s life. She has also enjoyed getting to connect with Lizzy’s sisters who attend the After School program as well. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is to have patience, patience, patience,” Lauren says.

Teachers have been readying their classrooms and our leadership team has been working on outcomes, data collection plans and budgets. We’re ready for our kids to come back tomorrow! Let the semester begin!
Today while our leadership staff held a planning session, we were blessed to also have Mark Lee and his MiTek leadership team on site completing work projects. “We believe that leaders should also be servants,” said Mark. To that end, their team convenes each quarter in a different city for a summit that’s kicked off with service at a local nonprofit. We’re so grateful for leaders like Mark and companies like MiTek!

We don't charge tuition for our programs; instead we require our families to complete 12 hours of parent engagement each year, and we rely on donors to keep our programs free and accessible to the children of Historic Southside. Learn more and give at www.fortressydc.org/2018. #linkinbio
An open letter from a Fortress volunteer and donor: "Dear friends,
Fortress is a special place. Walk into Fortress on any afternoon and you will see smiles, laughter and love. More than ever before, Fortress is equipping urban children with hope. The once-fledgling inner-city ministry is different now. The facilities are bigger and safer, the number of volunteers is larger, and through its expanded programs, Fortress is now not just loving children, but nurturing families as well. God is honored in this place.
This is why my family supports Fortress.
The compassionate staff works tirelessly to raise funds to conduct the work at Fortress. Let’s make their job a little easier this year. Join me in a year-end effort to raise $40,000 by December 31. I will get us halfway there with $20,000, and call on you to match the rest. It will be the best gift you give this Christmas.
Sincerely,
a former mentor, current volunteer, and long-time supporter of Fortress YDC" #linkinbio
Did you know? We boast a low turnover rate for our programs, and can enroll up to 150 kids at a time in our preschool and after school programs! Help us keep our programs full in 2019 by scheduling your year-end gift. Link in bio.
