They Give Kids a Dream

Today's featured blogger is Celeste Rodriguez. She is 18 years old and a member of the After Sunday Project.

This is my first year at Fortress, and although it's only my second day, the experience is already very eye-opening. I got to spend my first day with my buddy Chassidy yesterday, and she is very outgoing. She loves to make new friends, but her best friend is named Lilly. During the day we have a set schedule with the kids, and then when they leave we do an "Urban Experience."

Today my group went to take waters to the homeless. They appreciate life more than anyone I have ever met. I met this guy named Richard who was cracking jokes the whole time. I honestly can't remember the last time I laughed so hard. It amused me how they basically gave me a lesson about life and what to look forward to in the future. My outlook on being able to live like someone in poverty, makes me feel like I would be strong enough to do it. My favorite verse, Phillipians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," would give me the strength to survive and be blessed to be alive.

Here at Fortress they give kids a dream and these kids are so passionate about being a part of this community. My favorite moment would be worship and seeing all the kids participate in singing songs about worshipping God. I feel that everything happens for a reason and I've been going through a lot of tough things this summer and I felt that by being on this trip, God and the kids at Fortress have taught me to not give up and to appreciate the little things in life.

For the rest of my stay at Fortress, I look forward to continuing to learn new things. The verse that reminds me of being at Fortress is Psalm 23:4. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. I'm so blessed to be able to come to Fortress and be a part of these kids lives.
