Our featured blogger today is Austin Ford. He is 17 years old and a member of the Southside Church of Christ youth group.
I have two buddies at Fortress, JJ and Brandon. I didn't know what to expect, but I was extremely excited to help influence some younger kids. The funniest thing that happened was when a friend's buddy raced up the stairs and tripped. He then proceeded to lay down on the stairs as if he had planned the whole thing out.

[It surprised me how different the lives of some of the children are from mine]. I was very happy to be able to help build their self-esteem and give them my undivided attention. I think God brought me to Fortress to give my buddies a person to talk to and provide a calm atmosphere that [they might not experience elsewhere].
My favorite moment was the first day when I participated in the first morning devo of the week. Watching all of the kids jump around, and be genuinely being excited to sing songs about God was really uplifting. It was great to see younger kids being so into singing praises to God.
This experience has been so eye-opening and a great use of my summer. I will definitely be back and believe that if anyone decides to volunteer here, not only will they bless the children's lives, but will also be blessed by participating in the lives of the children.
